Current estimates suggest 4% of US cargo is inspected and only 1% worldwide, leaving us vulnerable to potential threats. The Gold Standard Radiation Detection (GSTND) technology addresses this issue by enabling 100% inspections with no delays thereby reducing cost to approximately 1% of the shipping fee. This advanced technology significantly improves upon the current radiation portal systems, which have notable weaknesses, including limited sensitivity and frequent false positives.

Sandia National Laboratories published the research (Derzon, 2019) which illustrates the method and concepts used in the GSTND instrumentation. GSTND is now refining these concepts into commercially viable systems. The technology’s initial applications will include detecting drugs, explosives and weapons of mass destruction. It is scalable, ranging from portable units such as backpacks or UAVs for state and local law enforcement, to large systems for ports, borders, trucking, or trains.
